Contemporary Explorations of Maqāṣid: Ethics, Sustainability, and Inclusive Futures

The current issue brings together a diverse collection of studies that explore the relevance of Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah in addressing contemporary social, economic, educational, and environmental challenges. Through interdisciplinary perspectives, the contributions highlight how the objectives of Islamic law continue to offer meaningful frameworks for understanding modern realities and guiding ethical development.

This issue opens with a study by Zain Razzaq and Rab Nawaz entitled “Reintegrating the Economic Objectives of Sharīʿah: A Study of Mawdūdī’s Economic Thought in Pakistan,” which revisits the economic vision of Abul A'la Maududi and examines how his ideas can inform contemporary discussions on Islamic economic objectives.

The theme of social inclusion is further explored in the article by Suhendri and Nazla An Nuha, “Toward Inclusive Islamic Education: Addressing Gender, Disability, and Marginalization through a Comparative Case Study Approach,” which discusses how Islamic educational frameworks can better respond to issues of gender equity, disability, and marginalized communities.

In the realm of governance and sustainable development, Saima Ali, Abdelaziz Berghout, and Ghulam Mohyiddeen present “Ethical Governance: An Islamic Perspective for Sustainable Development,” highlighting the ethical foundations within Islamic teachings that can support responsible governance and long-term societal sustainability.

Environmental concerns are addressed in Azzam Abu-Rayash’s contribution, “Analysis of Environmental Sustainability in the Holy Quran: Maqasid Framework,” which examines ecological responsibility through the lens of the Qur’anic worldview and the higher objectives of Islamic law.

Engaging with generational change, Rabia Ijaz contributes the study “Resonating Maqāṣid al-Sharī’ah with Generation Alpha: A Critical Inquiry into Contemporary and Emerging Realities,” reflecting on how the principles of Maqāṣid can be communicated and contextualized for the youngest generation growing up in an increasingly digital and rapidly changing world.

The issue concludes with a short communication by Jamila Tilout entitled “Realizing the Objectives of the Sunnah: A Scholarly Dialogue with a Distinguished Professor of Hadith,” offering reflections on the objectives of the Prophetic Sunnah and contemporary approaches to understanding and applying Hadith scholarship.

Together, the articles in this issue contribute valuable insights into how Maqāṣid-based thinking can inform inclusive education, ethical governance, environmental stewardship, and intergenerational engagement, demonstrating the enduring relevance of Islamic intellectual traditions in addressing present and future challenges.
